Sewing Pattern Challenge

Challenge Brief:

Math in Real Life Connection:  Sewing

Geometry is a part of everyday life.  I have recently started spending more time on sewing, which is one of my favorite hobbies.  Think of all the mathematical skills that I use while making these crafts!!

How do we use Geometry when sewing?

 (6.4H) We will convert units within a measurement system, including the use of proportions and unit rates. (6.8A) We will extend previous knowledge of triangles and their properties to include the sum of angles of a triangle, the relationship between the lengths of sides and measures of angles in a triangle, and determining when three lengths form a triangle. (6.8B) We will model area formulas for parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles by decomposing and rearranging parts of these shapes. (6.8C) We will write equations that represent problems related to the area of rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles and volume of right rectangular prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers. (6.8D) We will determine solutions for problems involving the area of rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles and volume of right rectangular prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers.

Create a pattern for a product that would include sewing and make sure to explain what geometric skills that it includes. (A sewing pattern is like the rough draft drawing of the product that you will create with measurements and notes.)
